Carvers Corner
(or Gary’s Gossip Column)
We still have empty tables at the 28th July Show so please sign up for one. We always have a great time and usually have a great turn-out of visitors. We also pay out some good cash.
We are still continuing to work on Comfort Birds. Thanks again to all who have been helping us with getting these birds cut out and carved. We are getting closer to our goal this year so any help would be appreciated.
Our monthly meeting was set back for a week to accommodate a Rich Wetherbee class. Rich held two classes and both were great.
We can use some Live Auction items. If you have any carvings or carving items to donate bring them to the Club. Also come and see what we already have.
We will get our remaining windows upstairs replaced soon. They will start after the July Show.
Dues are $10.00 + $1.00 per each family member. Always due in December.
Your Ol’ carvin’ buddy,
Gary

OUR RECIPE CORNER
Spicy Macaroni and Cheese
from the Kitchen of Jim Stewart
Ingredients:
8 oz. elbow macaroni pasta, cooked
1 pound bacon
2 jalapeños, seeded and diced
1/3 cup flour
2 cups milk
1 cup pepper jack cheese, shredded
2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup green onions, diced
1 cup Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, crushed
Directions:
1 Preheat oven to 400ºF.
2 Bring 3 quarts of salted water to a boil in a stockpot. Cook elbow macaroni pasta for 6-8 minutes, or until al dente. Remove from heat, drain pasta, and set aside.
3 In a large dishwasher-safe sauté pan, cook bacon until crispy and all of the fat has been rendered. Remove bacon from pan and place on paper towel-lined plates to drain, and, once cool, crumble. Remove about half of the rendered fat from the pan.
4 Add jalapeños and cook for 2-3 minutes. Whisk in flour and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until the flour and fat are combined. Whisk in milk
and bring the mixture to a simmer. Add in cheese, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper, and green onions. Continue cooking until cheese has melted. Remove from heat and add crumbled bacon, and macaroni. Mix to coat.
5 Pour macaroni and cheese into a medium-size casserole dish and top with crushed Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Cook in the oven for 5 minutes and serve warm.

Wood Magick
Artist Spotlight: Jay Haavik
Jay Haavik is an internationally renowned woodcarver, specializing in indigenous and older traditional cultures, particularly that of the Viking Age and that of the native tribes that populated the Northwest Coast of North America. A full time studio artist, Jay Haavik’s workshop is in Seattle, Washington and he is an instructor at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking.
After several trips to Norway, Haavik became enthralled by the woodcarvings of the ancient Norse craftsmen and began an exhaustive study of their techniques which culminated in him being hired by the New Oseberg Foundation as the lead carver in the making of a replica of the infamous Oseberg Viking Ship.
