Carvers Corner
(or Gary’s Gossip Column)

Our beginning woodcarving classes have been great. We’ve had 8 students and most have joined our carving club. We will have a few extra classes added to the end due to some new projects being planned. Jeff taught relief carving for three weeks. Gary did a class on faces and Steve did a class on a stylized otter. As of now we’ll have a bark class and a Comfort Bird class. Maybe even more to come.

The Raintree Show was held March 19th and was wonderful with great weather and good attendance. The Duneland Show on April 2-3 was great and was well attended. The Brukner Woodcarving & Art Show at the Miami County Fairgrounds in Troy, OH was also great.  Both the April shows had nasty weather with snow sleet and wind. The Linda Sales Woodburning Class in Converse was great and Linda had 11 students. Some of the students work is posted on our Facebook page.

We are still continuing to work on Comfort Birds. Thanks again to all who have been helping us with getting these birds cut out and carved.  We are still short of our goal this year so any help would be appreciated. Bob Alexander will teach the beginners class the art of Comfort Bird carving soon.

We had a raccoon and finally caught it. Saturday night Bob was in the building and heard another one upstairs so the hunt is on again. Wish us luck.

Bob Folk passed on April 24, RIP friend.

Dues are $10.00 + $1.00 per each family member. Always due in December.

Sunshine Corner

We’ve had a number of members with ailments this winter. Most are now improving and starting to get out and visit us here at the club.

If you know about a club member who needs a get well card or a sympathy card please let us know? Many of our folks live away and without your help we may miss the chance to send a card.

Dayton Carvers Guild

New location for 2016 Dayton Artistry In Wood

We are moving the 2016 Dayton Artistry In Wood Show to the Roberts Centre, near Wilmington, Ohio. This move is in response to the City of Dayton, owners of the Expo Center, announcing that they are turning the facility over to the Greater Dayton Airport who will use it as a storage facility effective June 2016.

We have selected the beautiful Roberts Centre located at 123 Gano Road, Wilmington, OH 45177 located near the intersection of Routes 68 and I-71. This facility offers everything under one roof, Holiday Inn Motel, Max & Erma’s Restaurant, plenty of free parking, and a large exhibition area. The weekend of September 3rd & 4th was available for 2016. We have booked this date.

Wood Magick

Purpleheart Armory

It’s no secret I have a fondness for swords. I have become particularly enamored with wooden practice swords of late and hope to begin crafting my own soon. As such, I’ve been prowling the internet, looking for  examples of well made trainers and the men (and women) who make them.

One of the finest craftsman of wooden practice swords I’ve stumbled upon can be found in the heart of Texas — Purpleheart Armory’s Christian Darce.

Purpleheart Armory is a small, family owned business that specializes in wooden training swords. They created the training swords used by Arya Stark and Syrio Forel on HBO’s Game of Thrones and the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen billy club for the Marvel/Netflix series Daredevil.

The Syrio Forel Training sword, pictured above, is made of hickory, with a jatoba pommel and crossguard.

Most of the wasters are priced at or around $60 and are high impact grade.
